Our duty as French Socialists is simple; we do not have to impose upon our government a policy of peace, for that is already its policy. Clearly, in this somewhat partial view of French policy, war could come to France only if forced upon her. But was not the war defensive for Germany just as it was for France? The German socialists thought so, as is indicated by the statement of the SPD in explanation of its war stand:
